I just had a fantastic couple of days fishing at Crane Prairie and Paulina Lake! I spent two wonderful days at Crane, reeling in a nice mix of fish, including lots of rainbows. And of course, it wouldn’t be a trip to Crane without some bass mixed in! While the Kokanee limits are getting a bit tougher to catch, the water temperature is warming up and currently sits at 56 degrees.
I had a blast fishing with my buddy Dave Bales from Lured Tackle and Full Throttle Bugs. Over at Paulina Lake, though, it’s still a bit on the chilly side. The Kokanee are starting to wake up, but the water is still pretty cold at 40 degrees. Most of the fish are hanging out between 35 to 50 feet. I tried fishing deeper near some large schools below 100 feet with no luck and managed to catch a couple right at the surface.
As the surface temperature gets closer to 50 degrees, I’ve found that pinks and oranges are the go-to colors! I’m really looking forward to mid-June when I expect Paulina Lake to be firing on all cylinders with quick limits for everyone.
If you’re up for a guided trip to catch Kokanee or just want to learn more, head over to Dayoneoutdoors.com and ask for James.
