Beautiful Day on Lake Billy Chinook The day we started with snow in Sunriver and Black ice at Lava Butte that will wake you up. By the time we got into Bend, the road was fine. We got to the lake, and it was like…. spring-type weather, 32° and not a breath of wind.
I started trolling outside the Crooked launch ramp. The water was still a bit stained but getting better. I trolled up to the Deschutes arm and caught a nice Bull trout. Beautiful fish kept fishing for Bull trout for another hour, picked up one more small one, and decided to start fishing for Kokanee.
Trolled 55-75 ft deep,  short setbacks 10-12 ft orange was the hot color. Pink worked as well, but orange was definitely better. The bite was on fire; doubles and triple hookups were the norm. This fast bite made quick limits 20 fish in about an hour and a half, making for an early day back to Sunriver by 2:00.
I have dates available for Kokanee and Bull trout fishing at Lake Billy Chinook until the end of April. Then, I start on April 22nd, guiding at Paulina Lake, East Lake, and Crane Prairie. If the fish and water cooperate, I will select dates at Wickiup.
