At Billy Chinook, I targeted Bull Trout and managed to catch a nice small one, along with plenty of Kokanee. We found them from the surface down to 85 feet, and the average size for the Kokanee was about 12 inches. After 10:00 AM, the recreational wake surf boaters flooded the lake, making boating etiquette essentially non-existent.
Crane Prairie offered some great fishing as well, with Kokanee reaching sizes up to 16 inches and plenty of nice-sized Rainbow Trout. We even landed a beautiful 22-inch wild fish! Just be prepared to clean your lines every ten minutes; while the weeds aren’t too bad, they can be a nuisance.
Paulina Lake has been productive, too, but it’s best to fish early since the bite tends to slow down after 9:00 AM.
I had a fantastic group of clients from Los Angeles, Bend, Prineville, and Sunriver Resort. We still have dates available in August, but they’re filling up fast! Visit Dayoneoutdoors.com to book a trip and ask for James.
