We kicked things off with the temperature hovering in the upper 30s, but by the time we wrapped up fishing around 2:00pm we were basking in the beautiful upper 50s with the sun shining brightly overhead.’
We started our quest for Bull Trout from 7:00 to about 11:00 but the fish were not biting despite our efforts.
Not to be discouraged, we decided to switch gears and target Kokanee using the incredible new FU cancer rods from Talon rods. Let me tell you, they performed like a dream!
We quickly discovered schools of kokanee swimming around 50 feet deep, and it wasnt long before we reeled in two limits of 10 fish each — what a thrill! The quality of the catch was impressive, with just one fish showing a tiny copepod among our haul of 20 quality fish, averaging 12 inches, with a few hitting 13 inches!’While we were in the middle of the kokanee action, the excitement soared when we hooded into a nice Bull Trout using kokanee gear! My client exclaimed that it was the biggest kokanee thy’d ever had on that rod — stunning 25-inch Bull Trout that put up a fantastic fight! we caught it on a lured dodger paired with a purple spinner and smile blade.
I’ll be guiding at Billy chinook until the middle of May, but once the weather warms up and the roads clear, I’ll be shifting my focus to Wickiup Reservoir for those massive kokanee and trophy brown trout, and don’t forget Paulina Lake and Crane Prairie for some troutaction, along with Odell and Crescent Lakes!
If you wat to be part of this fantastic fishing season, don’t hesitate — call, email or text to reserve your spot on the boat. Its going to be an unforgettable season!
I guide in the Deschutes National Forest under a Special Use Permit with Day One Outdoors. Let’s reel in some memories together.
